Mercy Medical Center needed to expand wound care ranging from standard wound dressing and care to infusion therapy. From the existing clinic, land-locked by other departments and critical mechanical equipment, the stakeholders, general contractor, and OPN explored several high level options within the hospital after determining that the care needed to remain immediately accessible to the Inpatient spaces rather than outside the hospital.
Through exploration, the team zeroed in on three options: to relocate to an alternate floor and two different scenarios from the current location. Based on the future plans for the hospital and necessary adjacencies the clinic chose to expand in place. Renovation and expansion in place has a host of complexities such as phasing and construction while in operation, but with some shuffling and careful planning, adjacent space was acquired to provide the expansion needed.
Following the completion of Phase 1, the expansion and renovation will continue into the remainder of the clinic; adding new, enlarged wound dressing rooms that better accommodate the patients needs, as well as additional staff support spaces that infill a once under-utilized area. The program added three wound rooms, two dictation spaces, an enlarged staff locker room, nurse’s station, one office, infusion suite with seven infusion bays and additional patient support spaces.
The project added approximately 1,812 square feet to the Clinic while renovating 8,460 square feet.
