OPN worked with the University to analyze the existing Boyd Law Commons in 2007. The small space wasn’t being used by students, so the design team spoke with students, faculty, and staff to determine the needs. OPN updated the study in 2013 when a new site for the student commons was selected and was hired to execute the project in 2015. The design optimizes the existing space and gives students a better place to convene, socialize, and collaborate by taking out existing locker rooms and breaking the space into different environments, including a large, open commons, a cafe, and small private meeting rooms. The cafe has multiple seating options and provides both grab-and-go as well as made-to-order items. Meeting rooms include two, eight-person spaces as well as two, 14-person seminar rooms equipped with smartboard technology. Various study and common areas include a mix of tables and chairs and comfortable seating. Windows and seating overlook the exterior courtyard, which was also remodeled and furnished. New IPE wood slats cover the concrete stadium-style steps and seating areas. Wood slats and linear lighting also cover the underside of the walkway bridge above.
