Year2013 & 2026
In 2010, following a flood, the original restoration of Theatre Cedar Rapids included an expanded lobby, relocated staff offices, more patron restroom facilities, a new lounge that would expose the theatre’s activities to the exterior, a relocated script library, and expanded facilities to support its education programs. In addition to renovations included in the original scope, redesigned actors’ facilities, a handicap-accessible classroom/rehearsal hall and future studio performance space, a recaptured lower level lobby and restrooms, new stage flooring, a full trap system, and the installation of the refurbished original seating on the main floor were needed.

More than a decade later, OPN has returned to the theatre to continue the work started by the most recent renovations, which focused largely on patron experience and performance spaces. The remaining half of the Iowa Theater Building—Theatre Cedar Rapids’ home—is unseen and underutilized. With an urgent need for rehearsal, classroom, and gathering space, TCR is addressing building connectivity and accessibility in order to thrive as a dynamic performing arts center. Unifying infrastructure, renovating upper floors, and enhancing production and patron experiences will launch the next era of community-centered theater, education, and partnership in this iconic downtown facility. The renovated space will provide new children’s and experimental performance spaces, flexible rehearsal spaces design to support music and movement, and multi-purpose spaces designed to support both rehearsals and rentable space that will provide additional sources of revenue for the theatre. The auditorium will also receive a facelift with new seats, refreshed paint and carpet, and improved lighting.
