Usage of the Pinney Library outpaced the branch’s available space. One of the busiest of the Madison Public Library’s satellite locations, Pinney serves multiple neighborhoods and  students from 12 schools within walking distance of the library and beyond. Pinney’s diverse patrons include many underserved students who are on free and reduced lunch programs and seniors eager to gain new digital skills, attend educational, life-enriching programs, and interact with other community members. Thus, the library’s programs were often beyond capacity, computer stations were full, and study/lounge seating was inadequate.

The renovated Pinney Library offers be a warm, welcoming environment that promotes literacy through play. The inclusive design uses natural materials and light to create an immediate sense of warmth and connect with many cultures represented by Pinney’s diverse neighbors. Plans for the 20,500 square-foot space include a flexible 250-person program room, expanded adult, young adult and children’s collections, updated technology, a patio for events and programming, quiet reading and study areas, and a drive-through book drops. Within the children’s area, a PlayLab, will offer a flexible space for children to create their own story and environment, incorporating elements of the educational philosophy AnjiPlay.

The $10.2 million branch, located at Royster Commons, also includes 16,000 square feet of commercial and residential space. The location is pedestrian-friendly, with Madison Metro bus access, bike racks and ample parking. The project is targeting LEED Gold certification.
