Year2006
In 2005, Mercy Medical Center recognized the need for a dedicated hospice center to serve the needs of the community. In response to that need, Mercy worked with OPN Architects to design a facility where patients and families can receive care and support.
The Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy is a 23,000-square-foot facility. Much like a private residence, this space is heavily used as a gathering space for patients and families to share support and enjoy the home-like atmosphere. Smaller, comfortable seating areas and alcoves radiate out from the core offering families quiet spaces to relax, talk privately, and spend time in quiet reflection. Large windows, a central courtyard, and private patios connect patients to the outdoors and fresh air.
Each patient room has its own connected, private 220-square-foot outdoor patio and garden space. A central courtyard stretches 2,900 square feet in size, with a fountain, benches, and paved walking path winding through shrubs and trees. Low-maintenance landscaping and vegetation populate garden spaces scattered across the property, with paved walking paths weaving between to allow patients and families easy access to nature and areas for reflection.
