Mercy Medical Center, like many institutions, has seen an influx in the demand for Gastroenterology practice. The Clinic had found itself in a great location, somewhat recently renovated, but not enough room to support their exponential growth. After much internal discussion, the owner determined it was best to move the practice to another location where expansion would be possible immediately and in the future.

As with many projects, the biggest challenge was budget. The owner wished to explore the relocation in two ways: minimal change vs. ideal state in a new location. The ideal state would provide immediate expansion opportunities. The minimally invasive plan would provide accommodation for their immediate needs, but would eventually lead to a new location in the future. Both options were explored in a location that had previously housed an outpatient clinic, so most of the needs could be met with minimal work.

The ideal state plan was investigated first to establish the ideal program and ideal patient and staff flow. The preference was to have a clinic layout described a “spokes of a bicycle” with a pod-like structure and centralized nursing team.

Following a pricing exercise it was determined that the best approach at the time was to utilize the existing clinic spaces as much as possible and only provide what was necessary to provide care for the current, increasing demand. The resulting plan provided adequate spaces with clear distinctions of functions. As a part of the renovation all finishes were upgraded, and accessibility increased. The clinic is working well in the new location as they are able to meet their needs at this time.

The program includes: 17 exam rooms, 1 treatment room, patient support spaces, and staff support spaces.
