The growing community of Marion needs a YMCA to keep pace with the demands of the rapidly developing city. The new 70,000-square-foot facility, which will be built as a partnership between the city and the YMCA, will be a game-changing facility for the community while sticking to a modest budget. It will be a social hub for recreation, wellness, and education with four gyms, a lap pool, family pool, group fitness rooms, fitness floor, track, racquetball courts, family locker rooms, child care, juice bar, and a large lobby that can also serve as a community gathering space. The design is composed of three simple bars to maximize transparency and connectivity. The gym bar, the fitness floor, locker room bar, and the pool bar are organized around a main street axis. The functions were carefully composed to create a lobby experience where all main amenities can be seen immediately upon entering, including the gyms, track, floating group fitness room, fitness floor, swimming pool, racquetball courts, and childcare. The welcoming social stair serves as a powerful statement about community, as it will encourage users of all ages to pause and interact.
