Out of space in the current facility, the Marion Independent School District worked with OPN Architects to address the school’s undersized science classrooms.  The solution was an addition at the building’s southwest corner. The two-story addition created classroom space on the main level and a fitness room in the basement. The six additional classrooms — a mix of biology, chemistry, physics, and general science labs — in the science wing freed up a comparable number of classrooms in the building’s core for other uses, which OPN remodeled as part of the scope of the project. In addition to a fitness room, the basement created flow-over storage as well as space for the mechanical systems required to properly ventilate the science classrooms. The project was completed in three phases to accommodate the budget and academic calendar. The first phase encompassed the remodeling of existing classrooms; the second phase was the construction of the science wing; the third phase was a remodeling of an existing science room.
