Maquoketa Valley High School
The focal point of Maquoketa Valley’s renovation and addition project is a new branded, secure front entrance that creates a point of pride for the district. The project also includes rearranging and remodeling public restrooms, adding windows to the commons and entryway, remodeling the high school locker rooms, remodeling the office and guidance office areas, adding a public fitness room, adding a weight room facility, remodeling the instrumental room, moving the concession stand from the west side of the HS commons to the south end of the commons, and adding a new set building and storage room for the auditorium.
The design of the entry — lit dramatically at night — creates a strong presence as well as a canopy. On the inside, natural light now pours into the commons. The need to expand a crowded and dysfunctional administrative area was accomplished with a new reception and administrative office, conference room and support space, including an elevator. The new weight room is larger, well lit, and vibrant compared to the dark, undersized former room. The locker room also was completely gutted, including the roof because the original design used bearing walls to support it. Athletes now have an open, clean layouts. Rooftop mechanical systems in the remodeled areas were also replaced. The design team was strategic in a phased approach to execute the majority of the work over the summer, when school was out of session. The remainder was completed in the fall of 2017 without interruption to instructional time.
