Iowa Veterans Home Dack & Malloy

Marshalltown, Iowa

The Dack and Malloy facilities are located on the pastoral grounds of the Iowa Veterans Home Campus in Marshalltown, Iowa. With 755 beds, the Iowa Veterans Home is the nation’s third-largest veterans’ home facility.  Serving Iowans since 1887, its mission is to “provide individualized quality health care in a community atmosphere where everyone is treated with respect and dignity.”

IVH hired OPN Architects to remodel the outdated facility, which involved salvaging the existing structure and building shell, converting existing double-occupancy rooms into single-occupancy rooms, and improving residential support and public spaces.  OPN remodeled 376,000 square feet of the four-story 249-bed skilled nursing facility. This included include bariatric-specific and double-resident units, kitchenettes, dining areas, offices, resident support rooms, assisted bathing suites, treatment and medication supply rooms, staff and public restrooms, linen rooms, oxygen, and other various storage rooms. The project also created modern environments for residents with the incorporation of art and personalized entries at each residence room. Individualized memory boxes and entrances are more prominent and aid in resident wayfinding.

Other work includes a new smoking lounge, renovation of occupational therapy clinic, nurses’ training rooms, and public restrooms. Upgrades include energy-efficient lighting, replacement of HVAC systems, expansion of data services throughout resident spaces, a new IT server room, and the replacement of in-room medical gas systems, exam lights over resident beds, and nurse call systems.
