In 2006, the First United Methodist Church began the process of renovation of the sanctuary and balconies. Many details of the room’s elegance were revisited from the carpet selection to the pew and chancel chair selections. A historical paint exploration revealed the original colors of the church. Using the revealed color palette, decorative painting created a historical interpretation appropriate to the period. Careful attention to the original plaster walls was taken during repair, and decorative plaster was recreated to restore original classical column detailing. Continuing the new color scheme, a custom decorative carpet was designed to compliment the overall space, as well as give detail to the center aisle of the congregational space as well as the chancel area. The chancel area was expanded by relocating the organ, and moving the communion rails from their original location. By allowing the communion rails to be removable, a much needed performance space was created. New seating was placed in the expanded chancel area to provide scale and function to the space. The sanctuary was also updated with new audio/visual and electrical wiring.
