The Ankeny Community School District remodeled the Neveln Resource Center to be administrative offices for district staff and school board meeting rooms. The Center consists of two existing multi-story buildings which were renovated to accommodate a change of occupancy from educational (adult and early childhood), senior center activity and dining space, and non-profit community organization meeting and workspaces into business and meeting spaces for school district staff and school board functions.
The significance of the 1919 high school building in the history of the City of Ankeny played a key role in the concepts guiding the redesign of the facility. Though historic tax credits were not pursued as a part of the renovation, the historic character of the original three-story, brick high school building was a significant attribute that the District wanted to restore where feasible. This was the first building built by the newly consolidated school district and served as the community’s high school until the 1970’s. In the years since it was built, modifications including major additions and other renovations have altered some of the original features of the building. The design was guided by the concept of intersecting the old and the new, the community and the district, along with staff. This idea was applied through techniques of layering and transparency throughout.
