Carolan Hoffman

Carolan joined OPN as a full-time employee in 2021 after interning in 2019 and 2020. Originally from Washington, Iowa, she earned her Bachelor of Architecture from Iowa State University in 2021. Carolan is inspired to practice architecture because of its ability to change in the way that people live and the way the world works. She would like to see design become even more inclusive, not just for people, but for the entire ecosystem. For her final studio, Carolan wrote the 132-page “Superfundamental” about Superfund sites and the EPA, specifically the Dico site in Des Moines, Iowa.

Q. When did you know you wanted to be an architect or designer?

A. Throughout my life, I have always had a love and appreciation for architecture that others did not always understand. I officially decided that I wanted to be an architect, when I took a drafting class in ninth grade and that class then cemented the idea of becoming an architect into my mind.

Q. What’s your favorite landmark and why?

A. My favorite landmark is the Grotto of Tiberius in Sperlonga, Italy. The grotto is located on the sea next to a pretty seaside town. The grotto is serene and breathtaking- I could spend hours there looking at it.
