Marion Fire Station earns Special Mention in Architizer A+ Awards
Marion Fire Station No. 1 has been honored with a Special Mention in the 2023 Achitizer A+ Awards. in the the Government & Civic Buildings category.
The Architizer A+Awards is the largest awards program focused on promoting and celebrating the year’s best architecture and products. Its mission is to nurture the appreciation of meaningful architecture in the world and champion its potential for a positive impact on everyday life. Typically, five finalists in each category are selected and are featured on Architizer’s website based on excellence in form and function in more than 70 categories.
The two-level 21,200-square-foot fire station in a rapidly growing community reduces response time, establishes a strong and transparent civic presence, and uses biophilic design principles to support fire fighters physical and mental wellness. Challenged by the then fire chief to design a station that would be a national benchmark for how biophilic design can reduce PTSD in fire fighters, the design employed the 14 Patterns of Biophilia to support fire fighters physical and mental health.
The fire station was also honored with two other international design awards: the Stephen R. Kellert Biophilic Design Award and a Rethinking The Future Award. It has been featured in the March Issue of Architectural Record and received an Honorable Mention from the International Interior Design Association Great Plains Chapter.
